HISTORY:
Ellesmere Port Panthers sprang to national
prominence in 2002, with a stunning victory in the Under-16 National Cup and a
double-overtime defeat on the same day (and with many of the same players) in
the Under-18 Final. They went on to win both the Under-14 and Under-18
Championships in that same year.
After an even more successful season in 2002-3,
which included reaching the quarter finals of the senior National Trophy, with a
Junior team, they planned to enter Women's Division 2 for 2003-4.
As it turned out, Division 1 suffered a spate of
withdrawals which left it teetering on the brink of collapse, and the Panthers
responded by volunteering to step straight into the top division.
With just one player added to their Junior squad
they had a remarkable season, finishing fifth (out of seven), and reaching the
Cup quarter final and the Final of the National Trophy.
The financial cost, however, was proving a strain,
a after just one season they withdrew from the Senior League to concentrate on
their Junior development.
Finally they re-entered Division 2 in 2007, and in
2008, with the tie- up between their club and the Cheshire Jets, as part of a
deal to further enhance development in the region, they became the BiG Storage
Cheshire Jets.
