HISTORY:
Loughborough All-Stars were one of the
founder-members of the League, back in 1972, and are the only survivors of that
original six.
In 1979 they withdrew from the League, due to
financial pressures, but remained a viable non-league club. Indeed, they won the
Founders' Cup (for teams outside the National League) in both the next two
seasons.
Re-entered (Division 2) in 1981, as Leicester
All-Stars, playing at the Granby Halls (at that time just converted for
basketball use). Promoted after unbeaten first season back (one of the very few
clubs ever to achieve that distinction).
Have been in Division 1/BBL ever since. Became
Leicester Riders in 1986, in sponsorship deal with local bus company.
Retained nickname after end of sponsorship deal.
In 1990s, the Granby Halls was closed for general
Sports Centre use, and its running was taken over by the club. In 2000 the City
Council suddenly announced that they planned to demolish the aging building, and
gave the Riders (short) notice to quit. After considering various options
(including quitting the League), they relocated back to their original home of
Loughborough University, in the new Sports Hall, though retaining the name
Leicester.
After a protracted search, the Riders
moved back to Leicester, to play at De Montfort University, in September 2004.
They had plans to build their own
Arena, but these appear to have been put on hold.
