HISTORY:
Spelthorne Acers entered NBL2 in 1993, with a team
based on their excellent Junior programme.
After just two seasons they finished
second, and were promoted to Division 1, in 1995.
Unlike many promoted teams, they
continued to develop, and consolidate, and within five years they had reached second place in the League,
and appeared in both the Cup and Championship Finals.
In 2001 the club was strong enough to
enter a second team, into NBL2 South, and the future looked good for their
continued development.
However, that season proved to be a
traumatic one for the Women's game, with administration problems resulting from
long-term staff illness and the beginnings of the Association's financial
crisis, and the season was disrupted by the withdrawal, midway through the
season, of long-serving Northampton Cobras, and the late admission of Central
London Amazons ... who then also pulled out in the New Year.
Disgusted at the prevailing confusion
in the women's game, Spelthorne quit the League at the end of the season.
In 2003 they re-entered, in Division
2, and, although most of their original key players had moved on to other clubs,
they finished a creditable third (on countback).
The following season saw the
re-organisation of the Women's Leagues, with four Regional Leagues at the start
of the season, from which ten teams qualified to play in Division 1, and
Spelthorne found themselves back in the top flight.
In 2005 the team changed their name
to London Heathrow Acers, and steady consolidation resulted in them breaking
into the top four again, as they finished third in 2007.
