HISTORY:
The original team on
Teesside was Cleveland Strongarm, who played in the National League
from 1974 to 1977, and then withdrew.
A second Cleveland team played in
NBL Div. 2 from 1985 to '87, and re-emerged as Teesside, in NBL 2, in '88.
They won the League title in their first year, but failed to gain promotion, as
the play-off winners were considered to be Champions.
They were, however, promoted
(as Middlesbrough) in 1990, and have remained in the top NBL/EBL
division ever since.
They
became Stockton in
1993, Teesside in '97, and Tees Valley in 2006.
Their most successful period
was at the turn of the century, when they were National Trophy winners for a
record five consecutive seasons (1999-2003), won the League three times, and the
Championship on four occasions (including three in a row in 2002, 2003 and 2004).
From then, however, their
fortunes declined. In 2006 they had a disastrous first half to the season, and
despite a recovery from December onwards, when they strengthened the team, they
finished next to last and were relegated to EBL2.
That, however, revitalised the
club, and, having added the Patron's Cup to their large silverware collection,
they finished the 2007-8 season as runners-up in Division 2, only missing out on
the title, to Cardiff, on points difference in the head-to-head. Promoted back
into EBL1.
