Solent Stars Juniors 85 - 72 Colchester
Alliance
Solent started the game well but could not capitalise on the opportunitites
they created for themselves missing a number of easy shots. Good Solent
defence in the first quarter had limited Colchester to just three field goals
but Solent still only led 18-11 at the end of the first. In the second and
third quarters Solent extended their lead to 28 points (72-44) with 12 minutes
remaining.
However, a combination of complacency, silly
errors and a lack of fitness caught up with the home side and Colchester were
able to trim the lead to just 7 points before a shocked Solent took control to
run out winners.

Solent Stars Cadets 104 – 61 Brighton Cougars
Although the result of this fixture was never in
doubt, the promising Solent Cadet team missed a valuable opportunity to hone
their game in a competitive environment. With the team sensing a
straightforward victory, there was a complacency at the defensive end, which
allowed Brighton to remain in the game until Mat Guymon returned in the late
on in the game to push the game out of the Cougars reach, with good support
from Liam Openshaw, Ransford Laryea and Jack Holmar.
Coach Steve Chant knows that there is still a lot
of work to be done if this Cadet team is going to dominate the more physical
teams in the league and to progress to the success that their undoubted talent
deserves.
Scorers were Guymon 36, Openshaw 15, Laryea 14,
Holmar 12, Josey 12, Titcombe 6, Young 6 and Glasspool 3.
The Solent Stars Junior Programme also enjoyed
success at both Junior and Cadet level in the Women’s National League, with
both teams performing excellently and the Juniors, in particular, showing
detrmination and nerve to record their first league success of the season away
to a traditionally strong Spelthorne Acers team.
Spelthorne Acers 56 -v- Solent Stars 57
After losing their first two league games of the
season Solent travelled to West London knowing that only a victory would keep
alive their pre-season hopes of reaching the end of season play-offs.
Trailing by a point at the end of the first
quarter (11-12), Solent stepped up a gear in the second period with England
international Charlotte Heron leading the way, scoring the next 10 points for
her team. The quarter ended with Rosie Chase hitting a long range 3 point shot
to give Solent a lead of 30-25 at half-time.
The second half began with Solent seemingly unable
to maintain the defensive intensity that they had showed in the previous
quarter, allowing Spelthorne to claw themselves back into the game & draw
level going into the final quarter.
A tense and exciting final quarter saw both teams
trading baskets. Going into the final minute of the game Solent led by four
but a 3 point shot by Acers cut the lead to one with only 16 seconds left.
From the inbounds, Jodi Jerram coolly kept possession of the ball & ran down
the clock to seal a hard fought victory for the Solent girls.

An understrength Cadet Women’s team also
performed admirably, in recording their first league victory of the season
away to Ipswich Bobcats.
Ipswich Bobcats 49 -v- Solent Stars 63
With the Solent Junior Women also playing on the same day the
Cadet girls had to rely on the experience of Rachel Almond, Emily Brookfield,
Bianca Dilworth & Holly Over for this away clash with Ipswich Bobcats.
After a slow start Solent trailed 23-14 at the end of the first
quarter, with Ipswich's England player Lauren Lindsay dominating with 10
points.
Solent picked up their defence in the second quarter with Emily
Brookfield switching to mark Lindsay after Rachel Almond picked up her third
foul. Holly Over made a major contribution with 11 of Solents 13 points to
narrow the margin to 4 points at half-time.
Solent however, had saved their best play for the third quarter
& continued their aggressive defence limiting Ipswich to 6 points whilst
scoring 21 of their own including 10 from Rachel Almond, to lead 48-37.
Solent got the 4th quarter off to a great start
scoring 7 unanswered points. After Emily Brookfield fouled out in the 6th
minute Becky Carr come on to continue her effective defensive role & was
rewarded with a basket in the last minute.
The eventual margin of victory enabled Solent to give valuable
court time to newcomers Charlene Blackman & Rosamond Day, both of whom had
chances to score in the final minutes as Solent ran out winners 63-49 to
secure their first league
triumph of the season.
SCORERS : Holly Over 21; Rachel Almond 19; Emily Brookfield 8;
Chloe McEwen 6; Becky Carr 4; Bianca Dilworth 4; Kaylee Long 1; Charlene
Blackman; Rosamond Day
Team:
Solent Under 15
Solent 25 Slough 38
This was Solent’s second game against Slough in as
many weeks. Solent lacked confidence against a tall, intimidating Slough team.
The zone and full court defence strategies adopted by Slough highlighted
certain weaknesses that will need to be addressed if they are to progress.
There were too many turnovers from fundamental errors. On a positive note
Solent defended well throughout the game.
The team needs to work on zone penetration
together with improving their work rate and basic skills - particularly their
footwork and passing.
Score: Solent 69 Woking 22
This performance was much more self-assured. With
the passage of play the team’s confidence increased exponentially. There were
far fewer elementary errors resulting in improved ball retention this helped
to create far more scoring opportunities.
Solent Stars U13 Passerell National Team
continued their season with the second series of games in 6 days with a visit
to Northampton home court at Northampton Boys School, a very impressive venue
apart from the lack of a coffee machine.
Solent Stars 48 – 16 Northampton
The first game, against Northampton opened with 2
points from Michael Polonski and continued at a fast pace through out. The
first quarter was a close affair with both sides showing determination and
finished with a lead of 10 to 8 to Solent. From the start of the second
quarter Solent’s defence took a strong grip to the extent that Northampton’s
next points came with only 2 minutes remaining of the 3rd quarter.
They finished the half at 19 – 8. Quarter 3 finished at 36 – 12 with most of
the team getting their name on the score sheet. Solent finished off the final
quarter allowing only 4 points against them while the team built up the margin
to a final score of 48 – 16. Highlights of the game included a game high 13
points (inc a great 3 pointer) from Michael Polonski. Owen Teesdale scored 12
with 4 rebounds and 3 steals. Josh Pape had 10 points with 3 rebounds and 4
steals. Thomas Hatchett had a great game with 4 points, 5 rebounds and 4
blocks. Mike Hurst had a creditable 5 points. Coach Vicky Carver said the
whole team deserved the Man of the Match award for their combined efforts but
if one person had to be named it must be Michael Polonski for the work rate in
defence and on offence.
Solent Stars 36 – 32 Reading Rockets
The second game was against the same team as the
previous week in Brighton. The tables were turned for the 1st
quarter with Reading out-scoring Solent 13 - 6. This was probably as a result
of tiredness from the previous game and perhaps a little complacency following
the convincing win. The second quarter saw a more determined effort from
Solent and finished with a narrow lead to Solent of 16 – 15. The rest of the
game saw the lead change a number of times, Reading kept up their momentum
with 2 runs for 5 and then 7 unanswered points over the 3rd and 4th
periods. Coach Vicky Carver regained the team focus with some wise time-out
inspiration helped by Steve Hatchett, In fact the whole team kept up the
side-line support cheering those on court. With less than 2 minutes to go
Stars were 28 – 32 down. The team defence stepped up denying Rockets any
further points while 2 from Owen Teesdale and Mike Hurst and 4 from Josh Pape
(inc 2 out of 2 from the line) sealed victory 36 – 32.
Another excellent display (apart from the 1st
quarter which the team can happily put behind them) from the whole team with 8
points, 4 rebounds and 4 steals for Chris Evans, Mike Hurst shone again with 6
points, 2 rebounds and 2 steals. Owen Teesdale worked hard with 10 points 5
rebounds and 2 steals. Josh Pape played well with 10 points and 3 rebounds and
deserves Man of the Match for his overall contribution especially the way he
held his nerve in the closing minutes. The team made 6 out of 10 from the free
throw line with Mike Hurst claiming 4 from 5.
Team; Mike Hurst, Josh Pape,
Owen Teesdale, Sam McGirk, Michael Polonski, Andrew Salmon, Mike Holdsworthy,
