02/02/03

Ilkeston 54 - 96 Solent

Solent Stars Cadet men have now reached the National Cup Final and wait to hear who their opponents will be in March. With a strong and talented squad, they have a real chance of lifting the trophy this year and will be the first cadet team from the Southampton area to achieve this honour.

It was a long journey to Derbyshire to be be met by a vibrant and noisy home crowd. After a very nervous start, Solent started to pull away after 5 minutes, finishing off the 1st quarter 23 to 8 in the lead.

In the 2nd quarter, Solent put together an outstanding display of aggressive defence and fine offense to put the game beyond
doubt, with the half time score at 44 to 16.

Solent relaxed in the 3rd quarter but started to pick up again in the final quarter to end the game comfortable winners.

Guymon top scored with an impressive array of 3 point shots, ending up with 28 points . It was an overall good, solid display from the whole Solent squad who are now looking forward to the final at the end of March in Sheffield, where they will have to be at their best to topple either Manchester or old rivals East London and secure the cup that they so badly desire.

Solent scorers: Guymon 28, Holmar 12, Josey 12, Titcombe 10, Young 10, Laryea 10, Openshaw 9, Glasspool 5.

The Junior Men were also in action at the weekend at home to Gloster Jets in a National League Premier League clash.

Solent Stars Juniors 70 - 55 Gloster Jets

Solent made hard work of a game they had expected to dominate from the outset.

The first quarter was close before Solent built a 12 point lead in the second. The home side couldn't find any kind of rhythm to their performance and lapses on defence cost them points and fouls as they allowed Gloster to drive along the baseline for easy scores. Solent led 55-47 with six minutes to go and then stopped Gloster from scoring for four minutes establishing a winning margin. Paul Loosemore again led the scoring for Solent with 19 points.

Solent Scorers - Paul Loosemore 19, Craig Dawson 10, Richard Smithson 9, Mark Green 8, Marvin Dilworth 6, Dave Riley 6, Mark Blackwood 6, Dave Ewen 4, Lawrence Brown 2

18/01/03

Brighton Bears Juniors 51 - 76 Solent Stars Juniors

Solent took an early hold on what has traditionally been a tough game for the Stars, when Matt Guymon hit five points in the last minute of the first quarter. Solent continued in positive fashion in the second going ahead 28-17 before the bigger Brighton team pegged the Solent lead back to just six at the half (38-32).

This important league game became very tight in the third quarter the teams drawing this one 10-10. In the fourth however, Solent managed to step up their defensive effort restricting Brighton to just 9 points and, hitting their best form on offence, netted 28 to run out comfortable and impressive winners. Ollie Rutter and Paul Loosemore both
impressed for Solent with good all-round performances and were the leading Solent scorers.

Solent scorers - Paul Loosemore 21, Ollie Rutter 18, Matt Guymon 13, Mark Blackwood 10, Lawrence Brown 5, Craig Dawson 4, Marvin Dilworth 3, Dave Ewen 2.

Solent Stars  Cadet Women 56 -  37 London Towers Cadet Women

Solent overcame London Towers for the second time in a month to maintain third place in the National League Premier South Division.

In the early stages of the game however Solent looked far from convincing as they failed to convert numerous scoring opportunities whilst defensively allowing Towers too much time & space to create easy baskets of their own.  Only Holly Over managed to find her scoring touch hitting 10 of her team's first 12 points of the game. The first quarter ended even at 16 points apiece.

Solent stepped up their defensive play in the second & third quarters however, restricting Towers to a meagre 10 points, whilst converting more of their own
chances to build up a comfortable 16 point lead going into the final quarter of the game. During this passage of play Solents 'tower' of their own, 6' 2" Nicola Scrivener, finally began to find her shooting touch scoring a season high 14 points & claiming 15 rebounds.

With the game won, the Solent coach, Ollie Jerram, continued to rotate her players during the fourth quarter allowing her less experienced players valuable court time.

SCORERS : Holly Over 14; Nicola Scrivener 14; Chloe McEwen 6; Emily Brookfield 5; Leah DeHaan 5; Bianca Dilworth 4; Rachel Almond 3; Becky Carr 3; Kaylee Long 2

05/01/03 MENS NATIONAL JUNIOR LEAGUE PREMIER SOUTH

Solent Stars Junior Men got the 2003 part of their campaign in the Junior Men Premier South division off to a good start in tight game at home to Ware Rebels on Saturday, eventually winning 70 - 69

Solent made a great start to the game going up 11-2 before a run of points by Ware saw them close the gap quickly. Solent played disappointingly for the remainder of the half and trailed 40-26 at half-time.

Dave Ewen and Paul Loosemore held things together for Solent and with the team playing better defence they began to edge back into contention, trailing by 10 points at the end of the third quarter.

Cadet Matt Guymon put in his best performance for the Junior team this season playing out the final minutes. He made a crucial steal and free-throws to edge Solent in front in the final minute to snatch a vital win, which keeps Solent in the hunt for the play-offs.

Solent scorers - Paul Loosemore 15, Dave Ewen 15, Mark Blackwood 8, Ollie Rutter 8, Matt Guymon 7, Craig Dawson 6, Lawrence Brown 4, Mark Green 4

21/12/02

Solent Stars girls teams finished their 2002 with a flourish with both the Junior and Cadet women defeating traditionally strong London Towers teams in their respective age groups and both teams lying in 3rd place of their respective National League Premier South competitions.

Solent Stars Junior Women 59  -v-  55 London Towers Junior Women

Solent took their time adjusting to the famous London Towers show court at Crystal Palace National Sports Centre as a sluggish start left them trailing 15-7 at the end of the first quarter.

The introduction of Stevie Ellis & new signing Lucy Palmer during the second quarter sparked Solent into life. With captain Jodi Jerram also starting to find her scoring touch Solent outscored their opponents 23-9 to take a six point half-time lead.

Stars held their advantage during a close second half, adopting a full court pressure defence to thwart Towers main scoring threat, England international & current cadet player of the year, Kate Butters.

Jodi Jerram continued her fine outside shooting form to finish top scorer with 22 points.

SCORERS : Jodi Jerram 22; Charlotte Heron 12; Stevie Ellis 7; Lucy Palmer 6; Nicola Scrivener 6; Natalie Broom 2; Bianca Dilworth 2; Holly Over 2

Solent Stars Cadet Women 60  -v-  46 London Towers Cadet Women

Solent finished off 2002 in style with a fine victory over London Towers. Twenty minutes after playing in the Junior game, five of the team stepped back into the oppressive arena at the hot & humid Crystal Palace to represent the cadet team. Four of these players started the game & to their credit showed no signs of fatigue as Solent raced into an early 15-4 lead. Conscious of resting players coach Ollie Jerram withdrew at this point her two most senior players, Charlotte Heron & Jodi Jerram. Towers took full advantage of their absence to reply with ten unanswered points. By the end of the quarter Solent held a slim one point advantage, 17-16.

The reintroduction of Heron & Jerram at the start of the second quarter had the desired effect as the pair rattled up 16 of Solent's 18 quarter points to lead 35-23 at half-time.

The second half was pretty even as Solent rotated their players throughout. Towers fought hard but with the added disadvantage of losing players through injury & foul trouble they never really made any inroads into Solent's first half advantage.

Rosamond Day continues to improve with every game. Playing the entire final quarter she ended up scoring a season high five points whilst also claiming six rebounds.

SCORERS : Charlotte Heron 24; Jodi Jerram 13; Bianca Dilworth 6; Rachel Almond 5; Rosamond Day 5; Holly Over 5; Kaylee Long 2

The Junior and Cadet Men's teams unfortunately fared less well with both Junior and Cadet teams suffering defeats in high scoring games.

Hackney Junior Men 102 - 87 Solent Stars Junior Men

Solent made a disastrous start to the game going behind 13-0 before finally making a basket. They trailed by twenty at the end of the first quarter 32-12.

Solent continued to allow Hackney to dominate the boards in the second period and went in at the half trailing 59-34. Solent improved in a zone defence, a strategy that effectively cost them the game last week against London Utd, leaving the coach, Steve Chant, perplexed.

In fact Solent rallied well and although Hackney had bench players in for much of the second half Solent actually won the half by 10 cutting the overall deficit to just 15 and proving that with a little bit of self belief anything is possible. Captain Mark Blackwood was only able to play a few minutes due to an ankle injury and Solent hope to have him fit for their next fixture with Ware on the 4th January.

Solent scorers - Paul Loosemore 26, Ollie Rutter 18, Dave Ewen 14, Matt Guymon 10, Lawrence Brown 6, Richard Smithson 5, Mark Green 4, Craig Dawson 4

Hackney Cadet Men 116 - Solent Cadet Men 101.

This was the second defeat on the run to a London team that seemingly could score at will.

The Cadet's defence was poor and just could not stop the bigger London team. It ended up being a very high scoring game but Solent could never close the 10 point gap which Hackney created in the 1st quarter.

Solent Scorers were Guymon - 33, Josey - 23, Laryea - 13, Openshaw - 10, Glasspool - 8, Holmar - 6, Titcombe - 6, Kenchenten -2

14/12/02

Solent Stars Cadet and Junior Womens teams enjoyed a weekend of victories as the Cadets comfortably outplayed Croyden on Saturday, the winning feeling carrying over to Sunday as the Junior Women managed to ease past Richmond College.

Cadet Women -  Solent Stars  54  -v-  Croydon Flyers  38

Solent notched up their second league win of the season with a comfortable win at home to Croydon Flyers.

Injury & illness allowed coach Ollie Jerram to call upon the services of Charlotte Heron for this game. The 6' 2" England international did not disappoint top scoring with 23 points & claiming 12 rebounds.

During the second half, with the result of the game never in doubt, Solent's less experienced players were given valuable court time & responded well showing great promise for the future.

SCORERS : Charlotte Heron 23; Jodi Jerram 9; Rachel Almond 6; Holly Over 6; Bianca Dilworth 4; Rosamond Day 2; Kaylee Long 2; Chloe McEwen 2

Junior Women -  Richmond College  37  -v-  Solent Stars  63

The following day Solent's Juniors made it a successful weekend for the women with victory away at Richmond College.

After racing into an early 10-0 lead Solent inexplicably eased off the gas to allow their opponents back into the game to lead 15-14 by the end of the first quarter.

A stern wake up call from coach Ollie Jerram & the use of a full court press did the trick in the second quarter as Solent took command of the game, taking their time on offence, whilst forcing Richmond to turn the ball over on numerous occasions, to lead 32-21 at half-time.

Solent continued their dominance in the second half & with confidence running high, shooting guards Rachel Almond & Jodi Jerram found their range
hitting 5 three-pointers between them and extending the lead to establish a comfortable 63 - 37 victory.

SCORERS : Charlotte Heron 16; Rachel Almond 13; Jodi Jerram 12; Natalie Broom 7; Bianca Dilworth 7; Nicola Scrivener 6; Holly Over 2

Meanwhile the Junior men were not quite so fortunate as they ran up against a typically resilient London United team, eventually losing by a tight game by just 3 points 84 - 87.

Solent got off to a flying start and led 22-12 after 7 minutes. The passing and movement was crisp from the home side and shots dropped from everywhere.

But Solent tired quickly to the dismay of coach Steve Chant. He made changes but Solent found it hard to score as London took a grip on the game with a 24-5 run. Solent then rallied and closed the gap to 5 at the half (42-47).

The remainder of the game was very tight and it could have gone either way. Solent missed a number of easy baskets at crucial times and London hung on for the victory.

Scorers - Ollie Rutter 22, Paul Loosemore 19, Mark Blackwood 14, Dave Ewen 13, Mat Guymon 9, Lawrence Brown 5, Craig Dawson 2

23/11/02 RAF CADET MEN

London United 64  122 Solent Cadets

Having made the journey to London, The Cadet men were dismayed when the match officials failed to appear at he appointed time.  With the game close to being called off, one official eventually appeared and with the help of a qualified member of the crowd, thE match was able to go ahead, much to the relief of the Solent Squad who proceeded to run away with the game.

After a very slow start, Solent pulled away  to comfortably beat their London opponents with a resounding win to keep up their unbeaten League and Cup run.

It was the speed of the Solent team headed by Ransford Laryea, who topped scored with 24 points and Carl Josey returning to scoring form with 23 points. The London team were no match for the quicker Solent squad and it ended by being a simple win to keep Solent at the top of the table.

Solent Scorers: Laryea 24, Josey 23, Guymon 19, Young 19, Bawden 10, Titcombe 10, Openshaw 8, Holmar 6, Glasspool 3.

23/11/02 RAF JUNIOR & CADET WOMEN
Solent Junior and Cadet Women entertained Haringey Angels at both levels this weekend ending with honours even, the Cadets losing to the unbeaten Angels whilst the Juniors won narrowly in a low scoring affair.

CADET WOMEN :  SOLENT  34  -v-  HARINGEY ANGELS  59

Solent knew they were in for a tough afternoon against league leaders Haringey but having won the previous weekend, Solent's coaching staff hoped that their girls would come into the game with renewed confidence.

Indeed Solent started well enough racing into an early 5-2 lead including two baskets from Chloe McEwen, however it wasn't long before Haringey began to find their scoring touch replying with 12 unanswered points.

By the end of the first quarter Solent only managed to add a further 2 points to their total with the quarter ending 23-7 in Haringey's favour.

To avoid a heavy defeat Solent had to match the speed & aggression of their North London rivals & to their credit Solent's young team did show greater determination & a desire to ' mix it'  during the remainder of the game.

In fact Haringey outscored Solent by only 9 points in the remaining three quarters however the damage had been done in that first period.

Holly Over once again led the scoring with 10 points whilst guard Emily Brookfield continues to improve with every game.

SOLENT SCORERS : Holly Over 10; Emily Brookfield 8; Chloe McEwen 8; Rachel Almond 6; Bianca Dilworth 2; Charlene Blackman, Becky Carr, Rosamond Day, Kaylee Long

JUNIOR WOMEN :  SOLENT  38  -v-   HARINGEY ANGELS  33

The Junior Women knew what to expect from Haringey, a tough physical encounter, &  were prepared to match them in these departments.

In fact some of Solent's play was a little too physical for the officials liking with Charlotte Heron picking up three fouls in as many minutes. This left her sat on the bench for the remainder of the first half.

Her replacement, Stevie Ellis, took full advantage of the increased court time to play undoubtedly her best game of the season so far.

Solent led throughout the game but their 11 point half-time advantage was quickly reduced in the second half when Haringeys R Davids hit two three pointers to reduce the gap to six going into the final quarter.

A further three point play from Davids at the start of the 4th quarter closed the gap even further however Solent held their nerve & played out the final minutes with good possession basketball to earn a narrow victory in an unusually low scoring affair.

SOLENT SCORERS : Jodi Jerram 8; Rachel Almond 7; Charlotte Heron 7; Stevie Ellis 4; Holly Over 4; Nicola Scrivener 4; Natalie Broom 2; Rosie Chase 2

24/11/02 RAF JUNIOR MEN

Waltham Forest 49 - 93 Solent Stars Juniors
Solent's junior team led 30-7 after the first quarter having taken an  impressive 20-0 lead. However they eased off again to the dismay of coach Steve Chant nearly losing the second quarter and tying the fourth quarter.

Mark Blackwood led the Solent scoring shrugging off his ankle injury to set a captain's example. He was assisted by Paul Loosemore and Dave Ewen. Solent lost their determination defensively with substitutions seemingly disrupting the flow of the Solent team.

They will have to stay focused in future as they now face three tough games in a row against London sides in the League.

Solent scorers - Mark Blackwood 19, Paul Loosemore 17, Dave Ewen 12, Mat Guymon 9, Ollie Rutter 9, Lawrence Brown 8, Richard Smithson 8, Mark Green 4, Craig Dawson 3, Dave Riley 2

16&17/11/02

Solent Stars Juniors 85 - 72 Colchester Alliance

Solent started the game well but could not capitalise on the opportunitites they created for themselves missing a number of easy shots. Good Solent defence in the first quarter had limited Colchester to just three field goals but Solent still only led 18-11 at the end of the first. In the second and third quarters Solent extended their lead to 28 points (72-44) with 12 minutes remaining.

However, a combination of complacency, silly errors and a lack of fitness caught up with the home side and Colchester were able to trim the lead to just 7 points before a shocked Solent took control to run out winners.

Solent scorers - Paul Loosemore 26, Ollie Rutter 17, Dave Ewen 13, Mark Blackwood 12, Mat Guymon 9, Craig Dawson 6, Richard Smithson 2

Solent Stars Cadets 104 – 61  Brighton Cougars

Although the result of this fixture was never in doubt, the promising Solent Cadet team missed a valuable opportunity to hone their game in a competitive environment.  With the team sensing a straightforward victory, there was a complacency at the defensive end, which allowed Brighton to remain in the game until Mat Guymon returned in the late on in the game to push the game out of the Cougars reach, with good support from Liam Openshaw, Ransford Laryea and Jack Holmar.

Coach Steve Chant knows that there is still a lot of work to be done if this Cadet team is going to dominate the more physical teams in the league and to progress to the success that their undoubted talent deserves.

Scorers were Guymon 36, Openshaw 15, Laryea 14, Holmar 12, Josey 12, Titcombe 6, Young 6 and  Glasspool 3.

The Solent Stars Junior Programme also  enjoyed success at both Junior and Cadet level in the Women’s National League, with both teams performing excellently and the Juniors, in particular, showing detrmination and nerve to record their first league success of the season away to a traditionally strong Spelthorne Acers team.

Spelthorne Acers  56   -v-   Solent Stars  57

After losing their first two league games of the season Solent travelled to West London knowing that only a victory would keep alive their pre-season hopes of reaching the end of season play-offs.

Trailing by a point at the end of the first quarter (11-12), Solent stepped up a gear in the second period with England international Charlotte Heron leading the way, scoring the next 10 points for her team. The quarter ended with Rosie Chase hitting a long range 3 point shot to give Solent a lead of 30-25 at half-time.

The second half began with Solent seemingly unable to maintain the defensive intensity that they had showed in the previous quarter, allowing Spelthorne to claw themselves back into the game & draw level going into the final quarter.

A tense and exciting final quarter saw both teams trading baskets. Going into the final minute of the game Solent led by four but a 3 point shot by Acers cut the lead to one with only 16 seconds left.  From the inbounds, Jodi Jerram coolly kept possession of the ball & ran down the clock to seal a hard fought victory for the Solent girls.

SCORERS : Charlotte Heron 26; Rosie Chase 14; Jodi Jerram 11; Nicola Scrivener 4; Natalie Broom 2; Stevie Ellis, Lauren Smith, Isobel Jacob

An understrength  Cadet Women’s team also performed admirably, in recording their first league victory of the season away to Ipswich Bobcats.

Ipswich Bobcats   49  -v-   Solent Stars   63

With the Solent Junior Women also playing on the same day the Cadet girls had to rely on the experience of Rachel Almond, Emily Brookfield, Bianca Dilworth & Holly Over for this away clash with Ipswich Bobcats.

After a slow start Solent trailed 23-14 at the end of the first quarter, with Ipswich's England player Lauren Lindsay dominating with 10 points.

Solent picked up their defence in the second quarter with Emily Brookfield switching to mark Lindsay after Rachel Almond picked up her third foul. Holly Over made a major contribution with 11 of Solents 13 points to narrow the margin to 4 points at half-time.

Solent however, had saved their best play for the third quarter & continued their aggressive defence limiting Ipswich to 6 points whilst scoring 21 of their own including 10 from Rachel Almond, to lead 48-37.

Solent got the 4th quarter off to a great start scoring 7 unanswered points. After Emily Brookfield fouled out in the 6th minute Becky Carr come on to continue her effective defensive role & was rewarded with a basket in the last minute.

The eventual margin of victory enabled Solent to give valuable court time to newcomers Charlene Blackman & Rosamond Day, both of whom had chances to score in the final minutes as Solent ran out winners 63-49 to secure their first league
triumph of the season.

SCORERS : Holly Over 21; Rachel Almond 19; Emily Brookfield 8; Chloe McEwen 6; Becky Carr 4; Bianca Dilworth 4; Kaylee Long 1; Charlene Blackman; Rosamond Day

Team: Solent Under 15

Solent 25 Slough 38

This was Solent’s second game against Slough in as many weeks. Solent lacked confidence against a tall, intimidating Slough team. The zone and full court defence strategies adopted by Slough highlighted certain weaknesses that will need to be addressed if they are to progress. There were too many turnovers from fundamental errors. On a positive note Solent defended well throughout the game.

The team needs to work on zone penetration together with improving their work rate and basic skills - particularly their footwork and passing.

Score: Solent 69 Woking 22

This performance was much more self-assured. With the passage of play the team’s confidence increased exponentially. There were far fewer elementary errors resulting in improved ball retention this helped to create far more scoring opportunities.

Solent Stars U13 Passerell National Team continued their season with the second series of games in 6 days with a visit to Northampton home court at Northampton Boys School, a very impressive venue apart from the lack of a coffee machine.

Solent Stars 48 – 16 Northampton

The first game, against Northampton opened with 2 points from Michael Polonski and continued at a fast pace through out. The first quarter was a close affair with both sides showing determination and finished with a lead of 10 to 8 to Solent. From the start of the second quarter Solent’s defence took a strong grip to the extent that Northampton’s next points came with only 2 minutes remaining of the 3rd quarter. They finished the half at 19 – 8. Quarter 3 finished at 36 – 12 with most of the team getting their name on the score sheet. Solent finished off the final quarter allowing only 4 points against them while the team built up the margin to a final score of 48 – 16. Highlights of the game included a game high 13 points (inc a great 3 pointer) from Michael Polonski. Owen Teesdale scored 12 with 4 rebounds and 3 steals. Josh Pape had 10 points with 3 rebounds and 4 steals. Thomas Hatchett had a great game with 4 points, 5 rebounds and 4 blocks. Mike Hurst had a creditable 5 points. Coach Vicky Carver said the whole team deserved the Man of the Match award for their combined efforts but if one person had to be named it must be Michael Polonski for the work rate in defence and on offence.

Solent Stars 36 – 32 Reading Rockets

The second game was against the same team as the previous week in Brighton. The tables were turned for the 1st quarter with Reading out-scoring Solent 13 - 6. This was probably as a result of tiredness from the previous game and perhaps a little complacency following the convincing win. The second quarter saw a more determined effort from Solent and finished with a narrow lead to Solent of 16 – 15. The rest of the game saw the lead change a number of times, Reading kept up their momentum with 2 runs for 5 and then 7 unanswered points over the 3rd and 4th periods. Coach Vicky Carver regained the team focus with some wise time-out inspiration helped by Steve Hatchett, In fact the whole team kept up the side-line support cheering those on court. With less than 2 minutes to go Stars were 28 – 32 down. The team defence stepped up denying Rockets any further points while 2 from Owen Teesdale and Mike Hurst and 4 from Josh Pape (inc 2 out of 2 from the line) sealed victory 36 – 32.

Another excellent display (apart from the 1st quarter which the team can happily put behind them) from the whole team with 8 points, 4 rebounds and 4 steals for Chris Evans, Mike Hurst shone again with 6 points, 2 rebounds and 2 steals. Owen Teesdale worked hard with 10 points 5 rebounds and 2 steals. Josh Pape played well with 10 points and 3 rebounds and deserves Man of the Match for his overall contribution especially the way he held his nerve in the closing minutes. The team made 6 out of 10 from the free throw line with Mike Hurst claiming 4 from 5.

Team; Mike Hurst, Josh Pape, Owen Teesdale, Sam McGirk, Michael Polonski, Andrew Salmon, Mike Holdsworthy, James Nunn, Daniel Radcliffe, Thomas Hatchett, Chris Evans, Robbie Conrad.
