94 (25,47,66) (Yanders 23, Hampton 20, Davis 15) Scottish Phoenix Honda Rocks will meet Guildford Heat in the final of the BBL Cup after beating holders Springfield Honda Newcastle Eagles 94-69 in Glasgow. The defeat puts an end to the Eagles holding all four British Basketball League trophies. After trading baskets at the start of the match a 7-0 run by the Rocks set them up for a 25-19 first quarter lead. A 6-0 burst midway through the second quarter extended the home team’s lead to 42-28 and after that the Eagles struggled to stay in touch. An 11-3 run to close the match confirmed Rocks’ dominance as point-guard Rob Yanders scored a game-high 23 with eight assists and eight boards. 03-12-06
BBL Cup Semi Final Guildford Heat secured their place in the BBL Cup Final at the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham in the New Year after an 87-81 victory over the Sheffield Sharks at the Guildford Spectrum on Sunday evening. After a tight opening to the game, the Heat enjoyed an 15-3 run at the start of the second quarter to lead 37-22, but the Sharks got themselves back in the game with a 12-6 run to close out the first half trailing by nine points at 41-50. The second half saw the Heat continue to maintain their slender lead, and an 8-2 burst to close the third period saw them leading 69-62 going into the final stanza. The home side started the final quarter with a 5-2 run, but the Sharks tied the game at 76-76 off the back of a 12-2 tear with 2:24 remaining. Guildford broke the Sharks resilience with a 11-5 tear to close out the game, with Brian Dux netting nine of those points to secure the victory, and their place in the final. Dux led all scorers in the game with 24 points for the Heat, while a combination of Eddie Cage, who also had eleven rebounds, and Blake Shelton led the Sharks scoring with 21 points each. 12-11-06 The semi finalists are now known for the BBL Cup after Scottish Phoenix Honda Record Rocks overcame Chester Jets on Sunday evening in Glasgow. Rocks join Sheffield Sharks, Springfield Honda Newcastle Eagles and Guildford Heat in the hat for the draw, which takes place at 11am on Monday morning. They were helped to their win thanks to 24 points from Rob Yanders. Sheffield Sharks booked their place in the semis thanks to a 76-64 win at the EISS on Friday night against DMU Leicester Riders. The Sharks outscored their visitors 20-9 in the fourth quarter to seal the win. On Saturday Guildford saw off the challenge of Kularoos Plymouth Raiders at The Spectrum. Chad McKnight poured in 39-points for the Heat on their way to a 95-88 victory. Scottish Phoenix Honda Rocks 84 (27,45,61) (Yanders 24, Joseph 20; Davis 19) Chester Jets 79 (21,41,58) (Cowan 19, Hargrew 14, Hamilton 13) Scottish Phoenix Honda Record Rocks secured their place in the final four of the BBL Cup after a hard fought 84-79 win over Chester Jets in Glasgow. The Rocks put together a 7-2 run to close the match out after the sides were tied 77-77 with 1.38 left on the clock. Rob Yanders (pictured right) hit five of those points on his way to a game high 24. Earlier the Jets had led 66-63 early in the final quarter thanks to a 16-2 burst at the end of the third and beginning of the fourth periods. The teams were then locked at 66-66 and traded baskets until the homes team’s match-winning run. 11-11-06
Guildford Heat 95 (26,53,75) (McKnight 39, Martin 16, Dux 15) Guildford Heat secured their place in the semi-finals of the BBL Cup thanks to a 95-88 victory over the Kularoos Plymouth Raiders at the Guildford Spectrum on Saturday afternoon. After a close first quarter, the Raiders opened up the second period with a 6-2 run to lead 32-28, but an 8- 0 burst midway through the period and a 20-5 tear for the Heat to close out the half saw the home side leading 53-40 at the break. The second half again saw the Raiders open the half with a 6-0 run to get the score back to 53-46 before the Heat responded instantly with a 10-3 burst of the own to take it out to 63-49 with seven minutes remaining in the third. Another 10-3 Heat tear to finish the period saw them leading by eleven at 75- 64 going into the final stanza. The Raiders valiantly attempted to claw back the deficit, and got to within five points at 86-81 with 3:12 remaining, but the Heat were able to hold on and secure the victory from the foul line. Chad McKnight produced a tremendous shooting display netting a highly-impressive 39 points for the Heat, while DeAntoine Beasley led the Raiders scoring with 22 points personal. 10-11-06 Sheffield Sharks 76 (13,36,56) (Shelton 22, Bonds 19, Cage / Cauthorn 11) DMU Leicester Riders 64 (16,34,55) (Alleyne 22, Herriman 14, Paternostro 11) The Sheffield Sharks progressed through to the BBL Cup semi-finals after a fourth quarter surge helped them past the DMU Leicester Riders at the EIS on Friday. The visitors actually had the better of the first quarter and led 13-16 going into the break. However, the Sharks, who last won the tournament in 2003/04, came back to lead 36-34 as the teams headed to the locker room at the half-way point. The thrid quarter remained close and it was a one-point ball game going into the decisive stanza. The Sharks came out strong in the fourth period and outscored the Riders by 20-9 to join the Springfield Honda Newcastle Eagles in the semi-finals. A couple of players stood out for the victors, Blake Shelton (pictured right) netted 22 points and also had 8 rebounds and 6 steals, whilst Jeff Bonds scored 19 points and dished out 5 assists. The visitors, who were missing Terrence McGee, were led by Andrew Alleyne's 22 points. Debutant Shawn Myers scored 7 points and snatched 12 rebounds. 05-11-06

Defoe/Babalola 10) Springfield Honda Newcastle Eagles got their defence of the BBL Cup underway with a 100-74 victory over the Milton Keynes Lions at the Metro Radio Arena on Sunday evening to qualify for the semi-finals of the competition. A close opening first quarter saw the Eagles leading 20-14 going into the break. After the quarter break, the home side came out all guns blazing and opened up a commanding 61-32 lead off the back of a 7-0 burst to close out the first half. The second half saw the Lions, who were without Tony Windless through injury, attempt to claw their way back into the game, but they could not close the deficit enough to pick up the victory. Shawan Robinson led all scorers in the game netting an impressive 32 points for the Eagles, while Ronnie Baker led the Lions scoring with 15. 22-10-06 There were two BBL Cup first round ties this weekend also. The Milton Keynes Lions progressed to a showdown with holders Newcastle after Tony Windless scored 25 points to help them beat Worcester 83-70. In the other game Plymouth knocked out London United by winning 79-74 to set up a quarter-final rendezvous with the Guildford Heat.
Kularoos Plymouth Raiders 79 (17,40,58) (Aaron 26, Lasker 18, Beasley 13) The Kularoos Plymouth Raiders progressed to a BBL Cup quarter-final showdown with the Guildford Heat after defeating London United 79-74 at the Plymouth Pavilions. It was a hard-fought second win of the weekend for the Raiders and was close throughout. The home side edged the first quarter by 17-15 and managed to stretch that lead to 40-34 by the halfway point. However, the Raiders couldn't establish a significant lead and the game went down to the wire with Andrew Lasker the hero for Plymouth down the stretch. With less than two minutes on the clock Tarrick Johnson drained a three-pointer to make it a one point game at 71-70. Gavin Love responded with a deuce for the hosts before Lasker took over. The American guard stole the ball and scored, before netting another basket with 40 seconds left to give the Raiders a 77-70 lead and it was left to Gaylon Moore to secure the win with a pair of free-throws to cap an 8-0 burst. Carlton Aaron once again led the Raiders with a 26 point haul, that was matched by United's Tarrick Johnson, whilst Lasker finished with 18 points. 20-10-06
Milton Keynes Lions 83 (16,37,57) (Windless 25, Jamison 16, Griffin 11) The Lions led 16-14 at the end of the first quarter thanks to a 7-2 run to close the opening period and they extended that lead to 37-38 at half time thanks to threes from Terrell Brown and new signing Ronnie Baker. Wolves began the second half with a 5-0 run but a 7-0 burst by the Lions blew the game back open at 57-42. Worcester rallied with another 5-0 run but still trailed by ten heading into the final stanza (57-47).
After exchanging baskets the
Lions sealed the victory with a 10-0 run to take the score to 83-63 and end
the hopes of the Wolves. Tony Windless was again impressive for the home side
with 25-points while Tom Perkes led Worcester with 20 and 10 boards. |
