The Poujoulat Heat Guildford have maintained their slender lead at the top of the BBL Championship after an 80-102 win over the Marshall MK Lions on Sunday; that despite falling to a 93-90 defeat at the hands of the Springfield Honda Newcastle Eagles on Friday.

It was a strong second-half performance, as well as 26 points from Mike Martin, that saw the Heat seal a 4-0 sweep of the Lions on the season. The win puts them two points ahead of the Sheffield Sharks with both having four games to play.

Previously the Heat had seen their nine-game winning streak snapped by the Eagles at the MetroRadio Arena. The reigning champions relied on Jeremy Hyatt to hold his nerve from the charity stripe to seal the win, as he sank five free-throws late on.

Despite that victory, the Eagles are all but out of title race after they lost 86-84 on the road at the DMU Leicester Riders on Saturday. Meanwhile, for the Riders, that win represented the sixth in the last seven on their home floor and has strengthened their bid for the playoffs.

The Sheffield Sharks are still close on the tail of the Heat, having beaten the Riders 100-68 on Thursday. Jeff Bonds scored 23 points as the Sharks gained a strong lead across the first quarter break and were never threatened from thereon. The win was their third against the Riders this season and their twelfth win in the last thirteen outings.

The top four, who get home advantage in the playoffs, are also in position after a good week for the Scottish Phoenix Honda Rocks. They concluded it with a 59-90 defeat of the Worcester Wolves, their fifth victory in six games, that confirmed their spot in the top four.

The Rocks also defeated the fifth placed Kularoos Plymouth Raiders 74-78 on Friday night; thus capturing the series with the Raiders 3-1 and rendering it impossible for the South-Coast outfit to surpass them in the table.

That win avenged a reverse result in Glasgow in midweek, where the Raiders won 90-102 largely thanks to 25 points from Carlton Aaron. It was Plymouth’s first ever win at the Braehead Arena.

The Raiders recovered on Saturday to defeat London United 72-104. They finish the season a perfect 5-0 against United in all competitions as Aaron notched a further 28 points and Ali Gall scored a season-high 22 points.

The Chester Jets gave their playoff chances a huge boost as they defeated London United 110-98 on Sunday at the Northgate Arena. The Jets are just one win behind United, with two games in hand, and crucially they have the head-to-head on points difference after splitting the series 2-2.

Chester Jets   110 (28,62,84) (McCullough 33, Virgil 29, Simpson 19)

Louis McCullough (33) and Alto Virgil (29) both had big scores, whilst John Simpson, renowned for his defensive prowess, also netted 19. Tarick Johnson led the visitors with 27 points.

A tight start to the game saw the teams tied at 11 and still close at 19-17 before the Jets rattled off the last 9 points of the opening stanza, inspired by 7 from Virgil, to take a 28-17 lead after the first ten minutes.

That momentum continued early in the second as McCullough scored 7 early points and the Jets stretched the lead out to 47-27. Simpson then added a further 7 points of his own before the half and the Jets led 62-41 going into the locker rooms.

United responded immediately after the break as a 14-4 push narrowed the deficit to 75-60; the Jets kept their visitors at arms length with a trio of triples, including one on the buzzer from James Hamilton, that had them up 84-64 going into the final stanza.
However, United made a game of it down the stretch after opening the fourth quarter with the first 7 points. Marlin Capers scored 9 and Tarick Johnson added 6 as a 15-2 surge then got them as close as they had been since the first quarter at 99-94 with 2.25 remaining. Yet they could get no closer as the hosts closed the game out from the free-throw line

Marshall MK Lions                80 (24,46,65) (Brown 26, Youngblood 11, New/Windless 8)

Robert Youngblood and Ronnie Baker hit further triples back-to-back to give the Lions a 24-18 advantage, but a strong finish to the quarter from the visiting Heat tied the teams once again at 24.

Mike Martin scored the first two baskets of the second quarter before Youngblood sparked a run of 13 unanswered points for the home side that saw them lead 37-28. They were still protecting a 42-34 lead two minutes before the break when another strong finish from the Heat made it a one-possession game at 46-44 at half-time.

The league-leaders made a move early in the third stanza as Brian Dux sank seven free-throws as part of a 17-1 surge that gave the Heat a comprehensive 50-65 lead. The Lions endeavoured to get back into the game and a pair of Terrell Brown three-pointers, accompanied by a Mike New score, helped them to narrow the gap to 65-74 going into the fourth quarter.

The Heat lead was still ten points at 74-84 when Dan Wardrope came off the bench to inspire the match-winning 15-2 run that pushed the lead out to 76-99, from where there was no way back for the Lions

Poujoulat Heat Guildford are edging ever closer to their first BBL league title after a win at Worcester Wolves on Sunday was followed by a loss for their closest rivals Sheffield Sharks.

Heat’s 88-70 win at the bottom placed Wolves, with 21- points from Daniel Gilbert, was made all the sweeter by the news from Glasgow that Sheffield had gone down 80-71.

Rocks had Sterling Davis in fine form and his 21- points against his former club proved too much for the visitors.

Davis had an excellent week as his basket with four seconds remaining at Chester Jets on Friday was the difference between the teams in an 81-79 win.

Sheffield had drawn level on points with Heat on Friday. Led by 35-points from Jeff Bonds the Sharks saw off London United 107-81 at the English Institute of Sport – Sheffield.

Saturday’s action saw Springfield Honda Newcastle Eagles maintain their slim hopes of keeping hold of the league title. Eagles beat Worcester 102- 92 with 36-points from veteran Tony Dorsey. The result means the Sharks have lost two more matches than league leaders Poujoulat Heat Guildford with the Surrey club having just six more matches to play during the regular season – Sheffield have five.

It was an excellent night for the Rocks though, as the win puts them four-points clear of Marshall MK Lions in the race for fourth position and then final home advantage play-off berth. Both clubs have five matches remaining.

Sharks began brightly and led 14-12 late in the first quarter before three-point shots by Hugo Sterk and Gareth Murray helped the home team to an 18-14 lead at the first break.

Rocks continued to shoot well from beyond the arc, and when Atiba Lyons pulled Sheffield back within one (30-19) from the foul line Rocks’ Maurice Hampton drained two more threes to put his side 41-35 up at half time.

In a tight third quarter Sheffield got back onto level terms (51-51) thanks to a three-pointer by Blake Shelton. However, Shelton was well marshalled by Sterk from then on and was limited to 15-points in the match.

A 7-2 run to close the third quarter by Rocks, which included a four-point play by Gareth Murray (pictured), gave them a 61-56 lead with 10 minutes on the clock.

After Rocks opened the scoring in the fourth Sheffield pushed hard to get back into the match but they couldn’t get within five. An 11-point lead (78-67) was opened up by Rocks from which the Sharks could find no way back.

Blake Shelton was the star man as he led the scoring with 28 points, 8 assists, and 8 rebounds. It was he who forced the extra period as he made a running three-pointer on the buzzer to tie the teams at 88.

Once in overtime the Sharks took control as a Joel Burns triple, against his former club, concluded five straight points that made the score 90-94. The Riders narrowed the deficit to 94-97, but a failed ‘alley-oop’ attempt followed by Andrew Alleyne fouling out led to their demise. After Alleyne was called for a technical foul for his protestations, Eddie Cage sealed the win with four free-throws with 21 seconds remaining.

Earlier in the tie, Jeff Bonds scored 6 points to help the Sharks out to an early 11-20 lead before the hosts scored the last 6 points of the opening stanza to keep it close at 21-25.
